Greek Orthodox Nun Collector Doll
The ancient tradition of monasticism has existed from the days of the Apostles, witnessed to by the words of Saint Paul to the Christians of Corinth "The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit:..." (I Cor 7:34) The Orthodox Christian east has seen generation upon generation take up this yoke, caring for the things of the Lord and praying, for themselves and for the world.
Our Greek Orthodox Nun Collector Doll is authentically dressed in every detail. The garb dates back more than a thousand years. The distinctive color of monastic raiment is black, symbolizing penitence. She wears a simple dress over a plain undergarment, a leather belt with metal buckle, and leather sandals. Her stockings and mandili (head covering) are painted. Over her dress, she wears a schema, a piece of fabric on which is depicted the symbols of Christ's Passion (the cross, spear, reed, sponge), abbreviated prayers, and mystical symbols representing consecration to a life of prayerful communion with Christ. Over all she wears a rasson (outer coat) and a koukouli (veil). A real wooden cross hangs around her neck and she holds a prayer rope with 33 beads, representing the 33 years our Saviour lived on this earth.
Each 15½" doll is individually hand crafted no two dolls are exactly alike. The head and limbs are cast in papier-mâché, beautifully painted and finished, and attached to a cork-stuffed muslin body. The clothing (five garments in all) and accessories are made from 100% cotton fabric, real leather, metal fittings, and plastic beads. A metal display stand is included.
